HELOC Rates Rise to 6.779% on Fed Decision Day; Home Equity Loan Rates Ease

HELOC rates rose to 6.779% APR this week and home equity loan rates fell to 6.745%. The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon; if it raises rates, borrowers with an open HELOC will most likely see an increase in their rate.

Full home equity loan and HELOC data tracked across all 50 states by MonitorBankRates.com; averages calculated from 6,879 individual rates at 1,746 banks and credit unions.

Average HELOC rates rose 0.030 points to 6.779% APR since our September 10 report, and average home equity loan rates fell 0.038 points to 6.745%. HELOC rates are quoted as the prime rate plus a percentage, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% since December. The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon; these figures were collected before it.

Home equity loan and HELOC rates, national average APR since early April

National average home equity loan and HELOC APRs since early April 2026.

Average APRs from MonitorBankRates.com's nightly collection, the same series this report's figures come from, updated daily.

HELOC rates rose 0.030 points to 6.779% APR this week, after falling 0.062 points in the prior report. HELOC rates are quoted as the prime rate plus a percentage, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% since December. The rate on an open HELOC changes when the prime rate changes.

Home equity loan rates fell 0.038 points to 6.745%, slightly more than the 0.032 points they added a week ago, and the average remains inside the narrow range it has held all summer.

Choosing between a home equity loan and a HELOC

A home equity loan is borrowed as one lump sum at a fixed rate, with the same payment every month until it is paid off. A HELOC is drawn as needed, and its rate changes when the prime rate changes. Our guide to the differences between a home equity loan and a HELOC covers both in detail.

More on borrowing against your home: home equity loan vs HELOC  ·  compare home equity rates
All APRs are national averages of what real licensed institutions are actually offering to borrowers, not promotional teaser rates or rate aggregator estimates. This comparison runs September 10 to September 16, 2026, with figures collected before the Federal Reserve's September 16 announcement. HELOC rates are variable and tied to the prime rate; home equity loan rates are fixed. Source: MonitorBankRates.com.

The answer comes this afternoon

The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon. Its benchmark has held at 3.50% to 3.75% since December, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% over the same stretch. When the Fed has raised its benchmark by a quarter point in the past, banks have typically raised the prime rate by a quarter point as well, usually within a day. If that happens today, borrowers with an open HELOC would most likely see an increase in their rate over the following billing cycle or two. If the Fed holds, the prime rate stays at 6.75%. Home equity loan rates are fixed.

Lenders will ask about insurance before they fund

Whatever today brings, one requirement won't change: a lender approving a HELOC or home equity loan wants proof of homeowners insurance on the property for as long as money is owed, so the premium belongs in the same monthly math as any rate on this page. Our MBR Home Insurance Burden Index ranks all 50 states by how heavily those premiums weigh on homeowners, and Texas homeowners can compare carriers in our Texas homeowners insurance guide. If the borrowed money is going into the house itself, get the updated insurance quote in the same sitting.

The bottom line while the Fed meets

Going into this afternoon's announcement, HELOCs average 6.779% and home equity loans 6.745%. Borrowers comparing local offers can line up Texas home equity loan rates against these national averages. These figures average more than a thousand lenders, individual quotes vary widely, and one more quote from your own bank or credit union is worth more than anything on this page.

Data Coverage & Methodology

All APRs in this report are calculated from rates collected directly from institution websites by MonitorBankRates.com's proprietary systems, tracking what real licensed institutions are actually offering to borrowers, not promotional teaser rates or rate aggregator estimates.

As of September 16, 2026, these averages were calculated from 6,879 individual rates verified at 1,746 banks and credit unions; the latest collection ran September 16, 2026. The table below shows the institutions and rates behind each product's average.

ProductInstitutionsRates Verified
HELOCs1,0982,074
Home Equity Loans7602,641
Total (distinct institutions)1,7466,879

Product counts overlap because many institutions offer both a home equity loan and a HELOC; the total row counts each institution once across the full home equity universe. Product rows reflect the institutions and rates that fed each product's most recent verified nightly average.

This report is for general information and is not financial advice. The APR any borrower receives depends on credit profile, equity position, loan size, and lender; confirm current offers with lenders before making decisions.

12-Month Forecast
3.137%
Range: 2.887% – 3.337%

Money market account rates are variable and move in close correlation with the Federal Reserve’s federal funds rate target. Our 12-month forecast is derived from the current MO high-yield money market average of 3.037% APY and a Fed funds spread model calibrated to the historical relationship between policy rate changes and deposit rate adjustments at banks and credit unions.

Key assumptions: the Federal Reserve holds the federal funds rate at its current level over the next 12 months, with the possibility of one 25 basis point increase; deposit rates at banks and credit unions track policy-rate changes within 60–90 days. High-yield money market rates tend to adjust faster than standard branch-based accounts.

Important notice: This forecast is for informational purposes only and should not be used as the sole basis for financial decisions. Rate forecasts carry significant uncertainty. The actual trajectory will depend on Federal Reserve decisions, economic conditions, and competitive dynamics among financial institutions in Pottersville, Missouri.

How to Find the Best Money Market Rates in Pottersville, Missouri

What to compare when shopping for a money market account in Pottersville, Missouri

To find the best money market APYs in Pottersville, Missouri, start with credit unions and online-only banks: Pottersville, Missouri has 24 credit unions in our database, and they consistently offer some of the highest yields because they are member-owned nonprofits with lower overhead than traditional banks.

Always compare the APY (Annual Percentage Yield), not just the interest rate, and pay close attention to balance tiers. Many money market accounts only pay their advertised top rate above a minimum balance of $1,000–$25,000, with lower rates (or monthly fees) below that threshold. The current MO high-yield money market average is 3.037% but top local institutions are offering as high as 5.00%, so shopping around pays off.

Unlike a CD, money market rates are variable. Your rate can change at any time with Federal Reserve policy. Also check check-writing and debit card limits: most MMAs allow a set number of withdrawals per month, and exceeding the limit can trigger fees. Review your account periodically to ensure your APY remains competitive.

When a Money Market Account Makes Sense

  • Emergency fund with flexibility: You get savings-level yields plus limited check-writing and debit access. Pottersville, Missouri high-yield money market rates currently average 3.037% APY, far above a typical checking account.
  • Larger balances ($10,000+): Many MMAs pay tiered rates that rise with your balance, so bigger deposits often earn more than they would in a standard savings account.
  • Parking cash between investments: A high-yield money market account at Pottersville, Missouri institutions keeps idle cash working harder while remaining fully accessible.
  • You prefer banking locally: 40 institutions in Pottersville, Missouri report money market rates to our database.
  • No rate lock-in risk: Unlike a CD, your rate moves up with the market if rates rise further.

Frequently Asked Questions about Money Market Accounts in Pottersville, Missouri

What is a Money Market Account (MMA)?

A Money Market Account (MMA), formally known as a money market deposit account (MMDA), is a type of deposit account that often pays higher interest rates than standard savings accounts. They usually come with check-writing privileges and debit card access, offering a balance of growth and liquidity for savers in Missouri.

Are Money Market accounts in Pottersville, Missouri safe?

Yes, as long as the institution is FDIC insured (for banks) or NCUA insured (for credit unions). This provides federal protection for your deposits in Missouri up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution.

How often do MMA rates change in Pottersville, Missouri?

Money market rates are variable and can change at any time based on market conditions and Federal Reserve decisions. We update our local Missouri rate tables daily to ensure you see the most current high-yield options.

Can I write checks from a Money Market Account?

Yes, most Money Market Accounts allow you to write a limited number of checks or make debit card transactions each month (typically up to 6), making them more flexible than a standard savings account.

How much do I need to deposit to open a money market account in Pottersville, Missouri?

Minimum deposit requirements vary widely. Some online money market deposit accounts can be opened with no minimum, while many banks and credit unions in Pottersville, Missouri require an initial deposit of $1,000 to $2,500 to earn the highest advertised APY. Larger deposits often unlock higher rate tiers, and FDIC or NCUA insurance protects deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution.

Can I lose money in a Money Market Account?

No. You cannot lose your principal in a money market deposit account as long as the bank is FDIC insured or the credit union is NCUA insured, up to $250,000 per depositor. This makes MMAs different from money market mutual funds, which are investments and are not federally insured.

What is the difference between a Money Market Account and a Money Market Fund?

A Money Market Account (MMA) is a federally insured bank or credit union deposit account. A money market fund is a mutual fund investment offered by brokerages that is not FDIC or NCUA insured and can, in rare cases, lose value. The rates on this page are for insured money market deposit accounts.

Do I have to pay taxes on money market account interest?

Yes. Interest earned on money market deposit accounts is taxable income in the U.S. You will typically receive a Form 1099-INT if you earn more than $10 in interest annually.

Are online banks better than local banks in Pottersville, Missouri for money market accounts?

Online banks often offer higher money market APYs because they have lower overhead costs. However, local banks and credit unions in Pottersville, Missouri offer in-person service and may waive minimum balance requirements for existing customers, which some savers prefer.
