HELOC Rates Rise to 6.779% on Fed Decision Day; Home Equity Loan Rates Ease

HELOC rates rose to 6.779% APR this week and home equity loan rates fell to 6.745%. The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon; if it raises rates, borrowers with an open HELOC will most likely see an increase in their rate.

Full home equity loan and HELOC data tracked across all 50 states by MonitorBankRates.com; averages calculated from 6,879 individual rates at 1,746 banks and credit unions.

Average HELOC rates rose 0.030 points to 6.779% APR since our September 10 report, and average home equity loan rates fell 0.038 points to 6.745%. HELOC rates are quoted as the prime rate plus a percentage, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% since December. The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon; these figures were collected before it.

Home equity loan and HELOC rates, national average APR since early April

National average home equity loan and HELOC APRs since early April 2026.

Average APRs from MonitorBankRates.com's nightly collection, the same series this report's figures come from, updated daily.

HELOC rates rose 0.030 points to 6.779% APR this week, after falling 0.062 points in the prior report. HELOC rates are quoted as the prime rate plus a percentage, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% since December. The rate on an open HELOC changes when the prime rate changes.

Home equity loan rates fell 0.038 points to 6.745%, slightly more than the 0.032 points they added a week ago, and the average remains inside the narrow range it has held all summer.

Choosing between a home equity loan and a HELOC

A home equity loan is borrowed as one lump sum at a fixed rate, with the same payment every month until it is paid off. A HELOC is drawn as needed, and its rate changes when the prime rate changes. Our guide to the differences between a home equity loan and a HELOC covers both in detail.

More on borrowing against your home: home equity loan vs HELOC  ·  compare home equity rates
All APRs are national averages of what real licensed institutions are actually offering to borrowers, not promotional teaser rates or rate aggregator estimates. This comparison runs September 10 to September 16, 2026, with figures collected before the Federal Reserve's September 16 announcement. HELOC rates are variable and tied to the prime rate; home equity loan rates are fixed. Source: MonitorBankRates.com.

The answer comes this afternoon

The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision this afternoon. Its benchmark has held at 3.50% to 3.75% since December, and the prime rate has held at 6.75% over the same stretch. When the Fed has raised its benchmark by a quarter point in the past, banks have typically raised the prime rate by a quarter point as well, usually within a day. If that happens today, borrowers with an open HELOC would most likely see an increase in their rate over the following billing cycle or two. If the Fed holds, the prime rate stays at 6.75%. Home equity loan rates are fixed.

Lenders will ask about insurance before they fund

Whatever today brings, one requirement won't change: a lender approving a HELOC or home equity loan wants proof of homeowners insurance on the property for as long as money is owed, so the premium belongs in the same monthly math as any rate on this page. Our MBR Home Insurance Burden Index ranks all 50 states by how heavily those premiums weigh on homeowners, and Texas homeowners can compare carriers in our Texas homeowners insurance guide. If the borrowed money is going into the house itself, get the updated insurance quote in the same sitting.

The bottom line while the Fed meets

Going into this afternoon's announcement, HELOCs average 6.779% and home equity loans 6.745%. Borrowers comparing local offers can line up Texas home equity loan rates against these national averages. These figures average more than a thousand lenders, individual quotes vary widely, and one more quote from your own bank or credit union is worth more than anything on this page.

Data Coverage & Methodology

All APRs in this report are calculated from rates collected directly from institution websites by MonitorBankRates.com's proprietary systems, tracking what real licensed institutions are actually offering to borrowers, not promotional teaser rates or rate aggregator estimates.

As of September 16, 2026, these averages were calculated from 6,879 individual rates verified at 1,746 banks and credit unions; the latest collection ran September 16, 2026. The table below shows the institutions and rates behind each product's average.

ProductInstitutionsRates Verified
HELOCs1,0982,074
Home Equity Loans7602,641
Total (distinct institutions)1,7466,879

Product counts overlap because many institutions offer both a home equity loan and a HELOC; the total row counts each institution once across the full home equity universe. Product rows reflect the institutions and rates that fed each product's most recent verified nightly average.

This report is for general information and is not financial advice. The APR any borrower receives depends on credit profile, equity position, loan size, and lender; confirm current offers with lenders before making decisions.

Forecast Methodology & Assumptions

Key assumptions: the Federal Reserve holds the federal funds rate at its current level over the next 12 months, with the possibility of one 25 basis point increase; unsecured lenders reprice new offers within one to two policy cycles, and advertised as-low-as rates move before average approved rates do.

Important notice: this forecast is for informational purposes only and should not be used as the sole basis for financial decisions. Rate forecasts carry significant uncertainty. The actual trajectory will depend on Federal Reserve decisions, economic conditions, and competitive dynamics among financial institutions.

What Would Your Monthly Payment Be?

Estimated monthly payments at the current AZ average personal loan APR of 11.72%, across the terms lenders serving Tonto Basin, Arizona most commonly offer. Personal loans are fixed-rate and fully amortizing, so the payment never changes and the balance reaches zero on schedule.

Loan Amount 24 Months 36 Months 48 Months 60 Months
$5,000 $234.71/mo $165.40/mo $130.98/mo $110.51/mo
$10,000 $469.41/mo $330.79/mo $261.95/mo $221.02/mo
$15,000 $704.12/mo $496.19/mo $392.93/mo $331.52/mo
$25,000 $1,173.53/mo $826.98/mo $654.88/mo $552.54/mo
$35,000 $1,642.95/mo $1,157.77/mo $916.83/mo $773.56/mo

Principal and interest only. Does not include any origination fee, which some lenders deduct from your loan proceeds. Your APR depends on credit score, income, loan amount, term, and lender underwriting.

Consolidating Credit Card Debt in Tonto Basin, Arizona

Debt consolidation is the most common reason people take a personal loan, and the math is usually straightforward: credit cards carry variable double-digit APRs, while a personal loan locks in a fixed rate and a fixed payoff date. Below is the total interest on a $15,000 balance repaid over 48 months at the AZ personal loan average versus a range of typical credit card APRs.

Repayment Option APR Monthly Payment Total Interest Interest Saved
Personal Loan (AZ average) 11.72% $392.93 $3,860
Credit card at 18% APR 18.00% $440.62 $6,150 $2,290
Credit card at 22% APR 22.00% $472.59 $7,684 $3,824
Credit card at 26% APR 26.00% $505.76 $9,276 $5,416

The 18%, 22%, and 26% figures are illustrative points across the range card issuers commonly charge, not a published average. Check your own statement for your actual APR, then use the calculator below to run your real numbers. This comparison assumes a fixed 48-month payoff in both cases; paying only the card minimum would stretch the timeline and raise interest substantially. Consolidation only helps if you avoid rebuilding a balance on the paid-off cards.

How to Get the Best Personal Loan Rate in Tonto Basin, Arizona

1

Prequalify With a Soft Credit Check

Most lenders serving Tonto Basin, Arizona will show you an estimated APR using a soft inquiry that does not touch your credit score. Prequalify with several before formally applying. The advertised rate is the best-qualified rate, and the number you personally receive can differ by many percentage points.

2

Compare APR, Not the Interest Rate

Origination fees run as high as 10% of the amount borrowed and come straight out of your proceeds, so a loan with a lower interest rate can cost more than one with a higher rate and no fee. APR folds the fee in, which makes it the only number worth comparing across lenders.

3

Check Local Credit Unions First

Credit unions consistently publish the lowest personal loan APRs in our Arizona data, and many charge no origination fee. Membership is usually easier than expected; many accept anyone who lives, works, or worships in the area. Federal credit unions are also capped by regulation on what they may charge.

4

Borrow Only What You Need, for as Short a Term as You Can

Lenders often price longer terms at higher APRs, so a 60-month loan can cost more per dollar borrowed than a 36-month loan on top of accruing interest for longer. Take the shortest term whose payment comfortably fits your budget, and resist rounding the amount up.

A $393 monthly loan payment is roughly 11.4% of the median individual income in Tonto Basin, Arizona. Lenders generally want your total monthly debt payments, including housing, to stay under roughly 36% of gross income, so consider the new payment alongside everything you already owe.

Personal Loan vs. Other Ways to Borrow

A personal loan is fast and requires no collateral, but it is not always the cheapest way to borrow. Here is how it compares to the main alternatives available to borrowers in Tonto Basin, Arizona.

Feature Personal Loan Credit Card 0% Balance Transfer Home Equity Loan / HELOC
Typical APR Level Mid, fixed Highest, variable 0% for a promo window Usually lowest
Collateral Required None None None Your home is at risk
Payment Predictability Fixed payment and payoff date Revolving, can last indefinitely Rate jumps when promo ends Fixed for loans, variable for HELOCs
Speed to Funding Often 1–3 business days Immediate if you hold the card Card approval plus transfer time Weeks (appraisal and closing)
Upfront Costs Origination fee up to ~10% None Transfer fee, typically 3–5% Closing costs possible
Best For Consolidation and one-off costs, no collateral Small balances paid in full monthly Debt you can clear inside the promo window Large projects when you have equity and time

General comparison for educational purposes; terms, eligibility, and pricing vary by lender and borrower credit profile. Borrowing against your home converts unsecured debt into secured debt; missed payments can put the property at risk. MonitorBankRates is not a lender or financial advisor.

Advertised APRs typically require strong credit; your approved rate may differ. This tool is for illustration and is not a loan offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do I need for a personal loan in Arizona?

Most lenders in Tonto Basin, Arizona require a minimum credit score of 620 for approval, but borrowers with scores of 720 or higher will qualify for the most competitive APRs. Credit unions in Arizona often have more flexible requirements than traditional banks.

What is the difference between secured and unsecured personal loans?

Unsecured personal loans in Tonto Basin, Arizona require no collateral and are approved based on your creditworthiness alone. Secured loans are backed by an asset (such as savings or a vehicle) and typically offer lower interest rates. If you default on a secured loan, the lender may seize the collateral.

Can I use a personal loan for debt consolidation in Arizona?

Yes. Debt consolidation is one of the most common uses of personal loans in Tonto Basin, Arizona. By rolling multiple high-interest debts (credit cards, medical bills) into a single personal loan with a lower APR, you can reduce your total interest costs and simplify repayment.

Are credit unions or banks better for personal loans in Tonto Basin, Arizona?

Credit unions in Tonto Basin, Arizona often offer lower APRs and more flexible underwriting than traditional banks because they are member-owned and not-for-profit. However, you must meet membership eligibility requirements. Banks may offer faster approvals and larger loan amounts.

What is an origination fee on a personal loan?

An origination fee is a one-time charge some lenders deduct from your loan proceeds, commonly 1% to 10% of the amount borrowed. On a $15,000 loan a 5% fee means you receive $14,250 but still owe interest on the full $15,000. The fee is built into the APR but not the interest rate, so compare lenders serving Tonto Basin, Arizona on APR. Many credit unions charge no origination fee at all.

Does checking personal loan rates hurt my credit score?

Prequalifying does not. Most lenders let you check an estimated rate with a soft credit inquiry that is invisible to other lenders and does not affect your score. Only a formal application triggers a hard inquiry. If you submit several full applications, group them within a short shopping window so credit scoring models treat them as one rate-shopping event.

Can I pay off a personal loan early?

Most personal loans from banks and credit unions serving Tonto Basin, Arizona carry no prepayment penalty, so paying early reduces your total interest. Confirm before signing, because a small number of lenders charge a prepayment fee or use precomputed interest, which removes the benefit of paying ahead of schedule.
