Savings rates two weeks after the Fed's increase

The Federal Reserve's benchmark rate has been 3.75% to 4.00% since September 16, when it raised the rate a quarter point in its first increase since 2023. In the two savings reports collected since, the high-yield average rose 0.077 points and then eased 0.013, and the five category averages have moved in both directions each week. Savings rates are variable, so a bank can raise the rate on accounts its customers already hold, with nothing to sign; how fast and how fully is each bank's choice.

Savings earnings at this week's averages

At the 1.965% high-yield average, a $25,000 balance earns about $491 over a year; at the 0.812% standard savings average it earns about $203. The savings goal calculator calculates the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal, starting from the live high-yield average, computed from rates published by more than 8,000 banks and credit unions and updated every day, and the CD vs high-yield savings calculator loads today's average for each product and accepts your own rates in place of the defaults. Savers checking local offers can line up California savings rates against these national averages, and category history is on our savings rate history page.

The bottom line for savers

High-yield savings rates averaged 1.965% this week, with jumbo savings at 1.245%, standard savings at 0.812%, business savings at 0.535%, and credit union savings at 0.256%. Savings rates are variable, and each bank sets the timing and size of its own changes. On a $25,000 balance, an average high-yield account earns about $288 a year more than an average standard account, and our guide on how to find the best savings rates online covers where to look first.

Data Coverage & Methodology

All APYs in this report are calculated from rates collected directly from institution websites by MonitorBankRates.com's proprietary systems, tracking what real licensed institutions are actually offering to depositors, not promotional teaser rates or rate aggregator estimates.

As of September 28, 2026, these averages were calculated from 19,279 individual rates verified at 3,587 banks and credit unions; the latest collection ran September 28, 2026. The table below shows how many institutions reported rates in each category.

Account CategoryInstitutionsRates Verified
High-Yield Savings255697

Standard Savings2,2315,914
Business Savings455880
Credit Union Savings1,0591,724

Category counts overlap because an institution can offer accounts in more than one category; the total row counts each institution once.
