Below is a plain-English breakdown of the top credit union checking rates available right now — including what you have to do each month to earn the rate, the cap on the balance that earns it, and who’s eligible to join. I’ve gone directly to each credit union’s website to verify the details rather than trusting the rate aggregators, because in a few cases the aggregator data was incomplete or wrong.

Now here’s what the fine print actually says.
1. Fremont Federal Credit Union — Hi-Lo Checking, 10.47% APY
Fremont sits at the top of every checking rate table on the internet right now, and the rate is real — I confirmed it directly on Fremont’s published rate sheet. But the headline rate has a major catch that most aggregator sites don’t show prominently: the balance cap is just $1,500, not the higher numbers some sites suggest. Anything above $1,500 earns 0.00% APY, full stop.
To earn 10.47%, you need to make at least 12 debit card purchases per month, receive at least one direct deposit, and enroll in eStatements. If you don’t hit all three, the entire balance earns 0% that month — a great example of why it pays to read the fine print before opening any rewards account.
At $1,500 maxed out for a full year, that’s roughly $157 in interest — nice, but not life-changing.
Field of membership: You qualify if you live, work, worship, attend school, or volunteer in Sandusky, Ottawa, Seneca, Wood, Hancock, Lucas, or Fulton counties in northwest Ohio. Family of existing members can also join.
2. Baxter Credit Union (BCU) — PowerPlus Checking Level 2, 8.00% APY
That eye-popping 8.00% is an introductory rate that lasts only 3 months. After the intro period, Level 2 drops to 4.00% APY, and it’s still only on balances up to $15,000. Anything over $15,000 earns a much lower rate.
To hit Level 2 (the higher tier), every month you need at least $3,000 in direct deposits to the PowerPlus account, enrollment in eStatements, and 30 qualifying transactions (debit card purchases, credit card purchases, online bill pay, or ACH payments). Level 1 is more attainable — $1,000 in direct deposits and 15 transactions — but pays only 1.00% ongoing (4.00% during intro).
Field of membership: This is one of the easier credit unions to join nationally. Eligibility includes employees of partner companies (Baxter Healthcare, Cardinal Health, Boston Scientific, Target, UnitedHealth Group, GEICO, and many more), residents of certain Illinois and Wisconsin counties (Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, parts of Cook, Kenosha, plus Schaumburg), and family members of any current member. Many people qualify through an employer they didn’t realize was on the list.
3. Landmark Credit Union — Premium Checking, 7.50% APY
The 7.50% headline is real, but the balance cap is just $500. After $500, the rate scales down sharply. At max-out for a full year, you’re looking at about $37.50 in interest. It’s more of a “thank you for using your checking account” reward than a serious savings vehicle — for actual savings, you’re better off in a high-yield savings account or money market account.
To earn it, you need to enroll in eDocuments and have at least $250/month in qualifying direct deposit (employer payroll, gig economy income, pension, or government benefits — internal transfers and Venmo don’t count).
Field of membership: Landmark’s field of membership covers Southern Wisconsin and Northeastern Illinois. If you don’t live or work there, you generally can’t join.
4. Evolve Federal Credit Union — ePriority Checking, 7.00% APY
Evolve’s ePriority pays 7.00% APY on balances up to $10,000 — one of the better risk/reward profiles on this list since the cap is meaningful. The aggregator site lists it at 7.23%, but Evolve’s own website says 7.00%, so go with the credit union’s number.
The qualifications are heavy on debit-card use: 30 debit card transactions per month. ATM withdrawals don’t count, and ACH/bill pay don’t count toward the 30 — only point-of-sale debit purchases. There’s also a $9 monthly fee on the basic ePriority account if you don’t make at least 15 debit transactions, though that’s waived as long as you’re hitting your 30. (For tips on dodging account fees, see our guide to free checking accounts.)
Field of membership: Limited to people who live, work, worship, attend school, or own property in El Paso County, Texas, or Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Members are required to make a $15 minimum deposit into a share savings account to join.
5. AmeriCU Credit Union — High Rate Checking, 7.00% APY
AmeriCU is unusual: to earn the full 7.00% APY, you need to have an active loan with them of at least $5,000 (not counting credit cards or student loans). Without the loan, the same account earns 6.00% APY — still solid, but worth knowing.
Other monthly requirements: 12 or more signature-based debit card swipes (PIN doesn’t count), and you have to be enrolled in eStatements. The cap is $10,000 at the high rate.
Field of membership: AmeriCU recently expanded to 24 counties across central, southern, and northern New York. You can also join if you (or a family member) is active duty, retired, in the reserves, or a veteran of the U.S. military, or if you work for one of AmeriCU’s business partner organizations.
6. Genisys Credit Union — Genius High-Yield Checking, 6.75% APY
Genius Checking is one of the simpler accounts on this list: enroll in eStatements, and use your Genisys debit Mastercard at least 10 times per month for purchases of $5 or more (ATMs don’t count). That’s it — no direct deposit requirement. The cap is $7,500, with anything above earning 0.05%.
Field of membership: Originally a Michigan credit union, Genisys has expanded to also serve people who live, work, worship, own a business, or attend school in Minnesota or Pennsylvania. If you’re outside those three states, you can join nationwide by making a one-time donation to one of their partner associations (such as the Paint Creek Center for the Arts).
7. 5Point Credit Union — Free High-Yield Checking, 6.00% APY
A solid middle-of-the-road option: 6.00% APY on balances up to $15,000 when you make 15 debit card purchases per month, receive at least one direct deposit or ACH credit/debit, and enroll in eStatements. Above $15,000, you earn 0.50%, which is actually better than most accounts on this list for “overflow” balances. ATM fees up to $25/month are also reimbursed.
Field of membership: 5Point started in 1935 serving Texaco workers and is now community-based in Southeast Texas. Open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in their service area in Southeast Texas.
8. Credit Union West — Heritage High-Yield Checking, 6.00% APY
Heritage High-Yield has the highest balance cap among the 6.00% accounts: $20,000. The qualifications are also among the simpler ones — at least 15 point-of-sale debit transactions per cycle (ATMs and account transfers don’t count) and at least one direct deposit or ACH transaction. No eStatement requirement on most accounts.
Field of membership: Open to people who live, work, or worship in most Arizona counties — Apache, Coconino, Cochise, Gila, Maricopa, Mohave, Navajo, Pima, Pinal, Yavapai, and Yuma. That covers nearly the entire state.
9. DuGood Federal Credit Union — Hi-Yield Checking, 6.00% APY
DuGood is the rare account on this list with a safety grade of F (Texas Ratio: 41.67%) — that’s a flag worth taking seriously. The Texas Ratio measures how much of a bank’s capital is tied up in non-performing loans; higher is worse, and an F grade means the cushion against loan losses is thin. NCUA insurance still protects deposits up to $250,000, but it’s worth knowing the institution itself is showing strain.
The account itself is generous on paper: 6.00% APY up to $25,000 — the highest cap on this list. To qualify each month, you need to maintain a daily balance between $1,000 and $25,000, make 25 signature-based debit card transactions, receive at least $1,000 in ACH deposits, and enroll in eStatements.
Field of membership: Open to anyone who lives, works, or worships in Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange, or Tyler county in Southeast Texas.
10. Sunmark Credit Union — Kasasa Cash, 6.00% APY
Sunmark uses the popular Kasasa platform. 6.00% APY on balances up to $15,000. Monthly requirements: 18 debit card purchases, at least one direct deposit or ACH transaction, and enrollment in eStatements. Note this is more debit transactions than most accounts (18 vs. the typical 12).
Field of membership: Open to anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school, volunteers, or owns a business in 14 New York counties: Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, or Westchester. Also open to employees of more than 250 community business partners and family members of existing members.
11. Evergreen Credit Union — Rise High-Yield Checking, 6.00% APY
Rise has a unique structure tied to dollar amounts spent, not transaction counts. 6.00% APY on balances up to $10,000 if you spend $1,500 or more per month on the Evergreen debit card or SunSelect credit card. If you spend $750–$1,499.99, you earn 3.00%. You also need at least one online or mobile banking login per cycle. Transactions must be credit-based (non-PIN).
Field of membership: Originally founded as the S.D. Warren Credit Union for paper mill workers in 1951, Evergreen now serves six counties in southern Maine: Cumberland, York, Oxford, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, and Lincoln.
12. Monroe Community Credit Union — Community Growth Checking, 6.00% APY
Probably the most demanding qualifications on this list. To earn 6.00% APY on balances up to $10,000, you need: at least $500 in direct deposits to the Community Growth checking account each month (not just any account at the credit union), eStatement enrollment, AND at least 10 debit card purchases of $5 or more. Miss any of those, and you earn 0.00% APY for the entire balance that month.
Field of membership: Open to anyone who lives, works, or worships in the State of Michigan, plus the Ohio counties of Fulton, Lucas, or Wood. Family members of existing members can also join. That’s a remarkably broad field for a credit union with “Monroe” in the name.
13. Public Employees Credit Union (PECU) — High Interest Checking, 6.00% APY
Despite the name, PECU is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in the Austin area — not just public employees. The account pays 6.00% APY on balances up to $15,000.
Worth a heads-up: a recent Trustpilot review accused PECU of designing the qualification requirements to trip people up. Take with a grain of salt — most rewards checking accounts work this way — but it’s a reminder that earning the rate every month requires consistent attention to the requirements.
14. DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU) — Grow Checking, 5.54% APY
DCCU’s Grow Checking has the highest cap on this list — $25,000 at the top tier. To get there, you need 15 debit card transactions per month, more than $250 in net debit card purchases, enrollment in eStatements, and the account also includes up to 10 ATM fee refunds (up to $5 each).
There’s actually a Tier 1 (10+ debit transactions) and Tier 2 (15+ transactions and $250+ in purchases). Tier 2 is the one earning 5.54% APY.
Field of membership: Open to anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school, or volunteers in 10 Virginia counties (Augusta, Bath, Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren) or 6 Virginia cities (Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, Waynesboro, Winchester) — basically the Central Shenandoah Valley.
15. NuMark Credit Union — Ultimate High Yield Checking, 5.50% APY
NuMark pays 5.50% APY on the first $25,000 and an unusually generous 1.00% APY on balances over $25,000 — the best “overflow” rate on this list. To qualify each month: 12 signature- or PIN-based debit card transactions, at least $500 in direct deposits, eStatement enrollment, and at least one login to NuMark online or mobile banking per cycle.
Field of membership: People who live, work, worship, or attend school in parts of Northern and Central Illinois (Boone, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, La Salle, Lee, Livingston, Kankakee, Kendall, Marshall, McLean, Will, Woodford) or Northwest Indiana (Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski). Employees of 450+ Select Employer Groups and family members of current members are also eligible.
16. St. Mary’s Credit Union — Kasasa Cash, 5.25% APY
5.25% APY on balances up to $10,000. Monthly requirements: at least 12 debit card purchases, one direct deposit or ACH transaction, and eStatement enrollment. A Kasasa Cash account can also be linked to a Kasasa Saver account that pays 4.50% on balances up to $50,000 — useful if you want to push overflow money somewhere productive. (Compare against options on our credit union savings accounts page.)
Field of membership: Open to those who live, work, or attend school in Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, or Worcester counties in Massachusetts.
17. Synergy Federal Credit Union — Rewards Cash Checking, 5.12% APY
Synergy pays 5.12% APY on balances up to $10,000. This one has a narrower membership window than most.
Field of membership: People who live, work, worship, or attend school in Live Oak County, Texas, plus employees of Valero Energy Corporation, NuStar Energy, Marathon Petroleum, Couche-Tard, Pearson, the Bexar/Travis/Harris County Medical Societies, and 3M in San Antonio. If you don’t fit one of those buckets, this one is hard to join.
A few things worth thinking about before you open one of these
The cap is the whole story. A 10.47% APY on $1,500 is roughly $157/year. A 6.00% APY on $20,000 is $1,200/year. The rate alone tells you almost nothing — pair it with the cap before deciding what’s actually worth your time.
The qualifications are real work. “12 debit transactions” sounds easy until you forget one month. Most of these accounts pay essentially nothing (0.00% to 0.05%) if you miss any single requirement. If you don’t naturally use your debit card 12+ times a month, this kind of account may not be for you.
Don’t park huge balances. These are designed for everyday checking, not savings. A high-yield savings account or money market is usually a better home for cash above the cap. Several of the credit unions on this list (5Point, St. Mary’s, BCU) explicitly pair their high-yield checking with a high-yield savings to handle the overflow.
Membership is the gatekeeper. This is the part most rate-comparison sites understate. If you can’t establish eligibility, the rate is irrelevant. The most accessible accounts here are BCU (because of its long employer list and family eligibility), Genisys (because of the association-donation pathway), Public Employees CU (open to anyone in Austin), and Monroe Community (open to anyone in Michigan).
Watch the safety grades. Most credit unions on this list hold A or A+ grades, which is reassuring. DuGood’s F grade is the outlier and worth weighing against the appeal of a $25,000 cap. Your money is NCUA-insured up to $250,000 either way, but a safer institution generally means smoother service and a lower chance of disruptive mergers.
Rates verified from each credit union’s official website on May 9, 2026. APYs are variable and can change at any time. Always confirm current rates and qualifications directly with the credit union before opening an account. For broader market context, see our national checking rate trends page.
