Mortgage Rates Today Lower Ahead of Fed MeetingMortgage rates today moved lower again ahead of the 2-day Fed meeting. In fact, average mortgage rates hit another new low for the month of December 2018. Mortgage rates are moving lower this month because of equity market declines. Investors are fleeing stocks into the safety of U.S. Treasuries, forcing yields lower, which in-turn are forcing mortgage rates lower. Current 30 year conforming mortgage rates are averaging 4.54 percent today, down from yesterday's average 30 year mortgage rate of 4.57 percent. Today's 15 year conforming mortgage rates are averaging 3.86 percent, a decline from yesterday's average 15 year rate of 3.89 percent.
