Best and Average CD Rates September 6, 2012: FOMC Will Force Rates Lower
CD rates available are are still well above the national average CD rates available. Unfortunately both the highest and average CD rates will probably continue to decline in the coming months. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on September 12 and 13 to decide the future direction of economic policy.
The current policy of keeping the Fed Funds rate at an exceptionally low level until the end of 2014 won't change. What might happen is the FOMC announces another round of easing to send bond yields lower. Another round of quantitative easing (QE3) will be more than likely if tomorrow's employment report is weak. While lower bond yields help the housing market by sending already low mortgage rates today even lower the policy also keeps deposit yields depressed.
