Auto Insurance Basics

You pay an insurance premium for an auto insurance policy. How much you pay will depend on where you live, the type of auto you are insuring, your age and the amount of auto insurance coverage you wish to have. Getting auto insurance coverage for a new driver, like a teenage driver, will be more costly since accident rates are higher with younger, inexperienced drivers.

For the auto insurance premium you pay, the insurance company agrees to pay certain expenses and legal liabilities if you’re involved in an accident or if you damage another vehicle. How much is paid also depends on the terms of your insurance policy.

There are several different types of auto insurance, including collision insurance, which will pay for damage to your automobile if you are in an accident involving another car or object, including damage created by potholes.

Collision insurance will not pay for damage from a flood or cover theft. For more complete coverage, you may want to get comprehensive insurance which picks up where collision leaves off, including loss due to theft or damage caused by fire, falling objects, missiles (yes, missiles), explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, flood, vandalism, riot, or contact with animals such as birds or deer.  Each policy differs, so all specifics must be clarified when you determine what policy best suits your needs.

If you have financed your auto, the bank holding the lien will require you to have a certain level of auto insurance coverage to protect their interests.

life-insurance-finding-the-best-life-insurance-companyFinding the best life insurance company and getting the best life insurance quotes has become a lot easier these days. Finding the best life insurance rates for the amount of life insurance coverage and type of life insurance you need will require some research.

Looking for Life Insurance? Use our life insurance search engine to find life insurance companies offering quotes in your zip code: Life Insurance Rate Search Engine

The amount of life insurance you need really depends on the amount of  income you have and the standard of living you wish to leave for your dependents when you’re gone. The amount of total assets you have also comes into consideration. Basically, the type of life insurance and amount of life insurance you need will also be determined by your family’s needs.

You should choose an amount of life insurance and type that is determined by the needs you are trying to satisfy while maintaining enough life insurance coverage without the cost becoming a financial burden.

Having too much insurance coverage can be costly and affect your long term financial goals. Having too little life insurance coverage isn’t an option either. Imagine your family grieving the loss of a loved one and then having to deal with financial issues as well, maybe even losing the home they live in.

One must assess their financial situation and choose the amount of life insurance that reflects your family’s circumstances without under-insuring or over-insuring.

Having the proper amount of  life insurance coverage for the provider of the home isn’t enough. Your family should also insure the caregiver raising the children especially if you have younger children in the household. Child care is very costly.

finding-the-best-auto-insurance-ratesFinding the best auto insurance rates available these days to insure your vehicle is a lot easier than it used to be. You can search and compare auto insurance rates from several insurance companies by using comparison shopping sites.

Car insurance is a must to protect yourself and others from bodily injury or property damage if you’re involved in an accident. Most states will not allow you to register your car until you show proof of insurance.

Figuring out how much auto insurance you need to protect your family will be the biggest decision you make. Each state has a minimum amount of auto insurance you can carry which can be a starting point for you but you will have to decide on the types of auto insurance coverage and the amounts you feel comfortable having. Error on the side of having to much car insurance coverage, you will be better off if you do have an accident.

Types of auto insurance include collision insurance, which pays for damage to your auto and any other auto or object you have an accident with.  If your auto is financed with a bank the bank will require you to maintain a certain level of coverage to protect their interests just in case of damage  to the vehicle.

Comprehensive auto insurance pays for damage or loss to your vehicle from other sources other than a collision. Banks will also require you to have comprehensive coverage if your auto is financed. Medical insurance coverage pays for a limited medical expenses for you or a passenger is injured in an accident.

You can also purchase insurance coverage for towing expenses and rental car expenses during the time your car is being repaired. Car insurance policies will pay a certain daily dollar amount for a rental car for a certain amount of time, usually for a month. Since the additional insurance costs for towing and a rental car isn’t much I recommend getting both types of insurance coverage.

best-health-insurance-rates-hmo-plansMost people have to choose health maintenance organizations (HMOs) plans from HMOs their employer is offering. Unfortunately this limits your choice of insurance companies and as a result your health insurance rates are probably higher.

Although getting your health insurance coverage through a health maintenance organization (HMO) will cost less than having health insurance through traditional fee-for-service insurance.

The primary purpose of  managed health care is to deliver less costly health care and at the same time maintaining the quality of health care. HMOs offer access to a  complete package of health care services in return for a prepaid monthly premium.

When you use a HMO you are required to obtain your health care services from doctors and hospitals affiliated with the HMO to belong to. You choose a primary care physician who treats you, makes health care decisions and coordinates referrals to specialties within the HMO network.

HMOs also charge a small co-payment depending upon the type of service provided. For visiting your primary care physician the co-payment can be $10 to $30, co-payments when visiting specialists can be higher.

Health Maintenance Organizations Points:

  • You must use health care providers that are part of the HMO, except in certain emergency situations. Otherwise  you will pay more out of pocket
  • Choose your primary care physician wisely because that person directs your care. Your primary care physician also coordinates referrals to specialties within the HMO.
  • You may be charged a small co-payment each time you utilize an HMO covered service.

finding-the-best-health-insurance-rates-ppo-plansFinding affordable health insurance coverage is getting harder and harder these days. Health insurance premiums have been increasing at a faster rate than inflation over the past several years. The Obama Administration is proposing drastic changes to increase health insurance coverage for many more Americans.

Find the Best Health Insurance Rates Here

One way of reducing your health care insurance costs is to use a Preferred Provider Organizations(PPOs). A PPO health insurance plan will cost you less than a traditional fee for service health insurance plan but you have to only see doctors that are on the “preferred” providers list.

You can go out-of-network to see a doctor but it will cost you more. A larger percentage of the total cost will paid by you depending on your health insurance policy.

The important things to remember about Preferred Provider Organizations is

  • You get more bang for your buck if you stay within the network
  • Going outside the network will cost you more.
  • You should make sure that your primary care doctor refers you to specialists that are in the network.

Depending on the insurance company some whole life policies require you to pay premiums throughout your lifetime while other whole life insurance policies only require you to pay a premium over a certain number of years.

Looking for whole life insurance or term life insurance? MonitorBankRates.com has a life insurance comparison tool you can use to find and compare life insurance providers in your zip code.

The actual insurance cash value that is built up is different from face value amount, the amount that is paid at death. To have access to the cash savings value you have to either take a loan out against the policy or cash the policy in and collect the cash value that has built up.

While the cost of whole life insurance is more than term life insurance the premiums you pay for a whole life insurance policy doesn’t change over the your lifetime. Whole life insurance is also known as straight life insurance, ordinary life insurance or traditional permanent insurance.

life-insurance-term-life-insuranceThere are two main types of life insurance, term life and cash value life insurance. You should understand the difference between the two insurance terms before you get a life insurance quote from a life insurance company.

There are also many different policy variations between these two types of life insurance. For this article we will only focus on term life insurance.

Get Life Insurance Quotes Here

Life Insurance

Term life policies provide life insurance for a specified period of time, usually for 10, 20 or 30 years but shorter periods are also available. The idea is there will be a period of time in your life you will have dependents that will need a source of income if you die.  If you die during the term period, the insurance company will pay the face value to your beneficiary, usually a surviving spouse or your dependents.

If you live beyond the term life insurance period, you do not receive any money. No savings or cash value is built up during the insurance term unlike a cash value life insurance policy. You can get more life insurance coverage with a term life policy than a cash value policy because term life insurance rates are cheaper. The cost of term insurance goes up as you get older, which can make it more expensive than cash value insurance in the long run.

Buying Term Life Insurance

When you buy term insurance, you need to decide how long you want the protection. You may renew the policy without a physical examination for the period of years specified in the policy. Another option is some term insurance can be converted to cash value insurance up to a specified age with no physical examination.

If you do convert some or all of the term life to cash value the premiums for the converted insurance will be higher for the cash value insurance. If you fail to pay the insurance premium for your term insurance, it will lapse without any cash value, as compared to a permanent type of policy that has a cash value component.

auto-insurance-insuring-a-teenage-driverGetting auto insurance for a teenage driver in your home is costly. The increased cost for auto insurance is justified by insurance companies for the simple fact that teenagers are a in higher risk category than everyone else.

Do you know the crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year-olds is four times the risk for older drivers? This risk drives the cost of your automotible insurance a lot higher.

There are some steps you can take to keep the increased insurance premiums down.

Find the Best Auto Insurance Rates Here

Have your teenager take a defensive driver course if the state you live in doesn’t already require a defensive driver course to obtain a drivers licence.

Add the teenage driver to your auto insurance policy, this is cheaper than having your teenager get their own insurance.

Consider combining your home insurance and auto insurance if you haven’t already. Most insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance if you have more than one type of insurance coverage.

Shop around for the auto insurance rates. Since you’re adding a teenage driver and maybe another car now is probably a good time to comparison shop for car insurance rates.
